Let’s Talk Turkey

Thanksgiving is next week and as everyone knows we often refer to this day of giving thanks as “Turkey Day”. This year before “Turkey Day” gather your students and talk about turkeys. Ask them what they think of when they hear the word “turkey”. Are their thoughts about domestic or wild turkeys? What is the difference? Use Project WILD’s “Let’s Talk Turkey” to explore the history of Wild Turkeys.

For information on the history of Wild Turkeys in Iowa visit:
Iowa DNR Wildlife Wild Turkey Restoration http://www.iowadnr.gov/wildlife/files/files/turkey_restoration.pdf

Young Child Extension

Ask young children if they have ever seen a turkey. Where was it? What did it look like? Talk about what turkeys look like and where they live and the difference between wild and domestic turkeys. For more ideas and for snacks and crafts use Growing Up WILD’s “Terrific Turkeys”

Have Seeds Will Travel

It’s time to take a “seed walk”! Autumn is the best time of year for collecting seeds. Take kids out to collect seeds from plants along a trail, in the schoolyard or have them collect seeds from home to bring to school. Then use Project Learning Tree’s “Have Seeds Will Travel” to examine and explore the wonder of seeds!

Young Child Extension
Use Growing Up WILD’s “Seed Need” to explore the fascinating world of plant seeds with young children. Take the children on a “seed walk” to collect seeds and then let them examine the seeds. They can sort them by size, shape, or color. Or use the seeds to create seed collages!
